Double European Cross Country Champion Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC)finished in seventh place in a top class field at the Cross de l’Acier in France on Sunday.
It was Britton’s first real test of the winter as she continues her preparations towards the defence of her European cross country title in Belgrade on December 8th. The Wicklow native finished the 6.6km course in a time of 23.03. The race was won by Ethiopian athlete Hiwot Ayelew in a time of 22.30. One of Britton’s big rivals for the European title Sophie Duarte of France finished in fifth place in a time of 22.54.
Ireland’s Michael Mulhare (Portlaoise AC) fresh from his second place finish at the last weekend’s Woodie’s DIY national inter county cross country championships competed in the men’s race. Mulhare was up against a top quality field with Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes occupying the top six positions. Mulhare finished in 11th place in a time of 29.33; the race was won by Kenyan athlete Cornelius Kangogo in a time a time of 28.07.
