This week, the Irish athletics squad prepared to jet off for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow as the expectation and excitement continues to build.
The 11-athlete strong squad will be keen to have a good showing to follow on from the decent performances they had at the Olympics in London last summer.
The crop of talented athletes includes Robert Heffernan, who’ll be partaking in the 50km walk, Mark English who’s vying to get a medal in the 800m and Jennifer Carey who’ll be involved in the 400m.
The championships take place from the 10th-18th of August with the best athletes in the world vying for the world titles.
No doubt, the going will be tough for the Irish over the course of the competition’s nine days, however the medals are there for the taking, and many of the athletes have been hitting personal bests at the right time coming into the contest.
As the excitement builds, some of Ireland’s athletes have taken to twitter to narrate their journey and voice their glee at participating in one of the biggest track and field events around:

High Performance Director, Kevin Ankrom has said: “Moscow is a good opportunity for a generation of talented young athletes as they start to emerge at senior competitions while on the next cycle to 2016. Its part of a transition for a young generation of athletes that should use these championships as an experience to build on, while not having to maintain a sole focus or expectation of being in a final the first time out”
He added: “Overall our 2013 Irish Team is young and looking for championship experience. Most of the athletes are coming off a previous championship event and this meet is an added bonus for them this year.”
With only a few days left until the competition proper begins, it’s time for Athletics fans all across the country to whip out the tricolour again and roar our representatives to glory.
