Crowe and Cronin take 1,000m titles

Updated: January 23, 2012

The Woodie’s DIY Games shared the stage with the Combined Events championships at the Nenagh Stadium on Saturday and there was some terrific competition throughout the course of the day.

The women’s 1,000m saw Laura Crowe (An Riocht AC) surge into the lead, but was soon overtaken by Orla Drumm (UCC AC), who was in turn overtaken by Sara Louise Treacy (Moynalvy AC) who held the lead until Crowe launched her final attack on the last lap. She surged past Treacy for a fine win in 2:50.97, well inside her previous best of 2:53.74 from last year’s AAI Games.

Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC) was fast away in the men’s 1,000m, closely followed by Sam Kelly (Fingallians AC) and junior Dean Cronin (Blarney Inniscarra AC). The order remained mostly the same with Hanrahan looking the likely winner with 100m to go. However, Cronin moved up a gear and finished fastest of all to bring him past the long time leader for an excellent win in 2:27.58 to Hanrahan’s 2:27.78.

There was a surprise in the women’s long jump with Mary McLoone (Tir Chonaill AC) winning with a jump of 6.13m from Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC) with 5.98m.

David Tierney (Leevale AC) won the men’s championship 56lb throw with a best of 8.16m from Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) with 8.01m. Breathnach returned to win the shot with 15.58m ahead of Kieron Stout Celbridge with 13.40m and Tierney with 12.46m.

David Hynes (Menapians AC) won the two 60m races on the programme, the first in 7.05 and the second in 7.02, which equalled his PB. He also won the 200m in 22.31.

The two women’s 60m races were won convincingly by Amy Foster (Lisburn AC) who won the first in 7.52 and the second in 7.55, just outside her best of 7.44.

The men’s 400m saw Patrick Phelan (Dundrum South Dublin AC) run the fastest time of the day in race 2 with 51.06, while Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock AC) won the first race in a time of 51.09.

Claire Bergin (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won the women’s 400m in a time of 55.34, just outside her indoor best of 55.06.
