Oscar Pistorius has been formally charged with the murder of his girlfriend at Pretoria Magistrates’ Court.
The legendary sprinter broke down as the charges were read out in the court room. Pistorius was taken into custody yesterday morning after Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead at the home they shared. The news shocked the whole of South Africa where 26-year-old Pistorius is regarded as a national hero.
Initial reports claimed that Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder but police have denied that this happened, indicating that there had been previous incidents at the home.
Pistorius was surrounded my reporters as he was taken from the police station to travel to Pretoria Magistrates’ Court and the Olympic and Paralympic athlete held his head in his hands as the murder charge was formally read out.
In 2012 Pistorius became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the London Olympics, reaching the 400m semi-finals, before going on to win silver in the T44 200m, gold in the 4×100 relay and gold in the T44 400m at the Paralympics.
