The Woodie’s DIY AAI Master Indoor Championships will take place this Saturday the 9th of February in the AIT Arena in Athlone.
The men’s 400m & 200m will be an exciting affair with former Olympian Paul McKee (Beechmount Harriers A.C) taking to the AIT track. McKee lies fifth on the Irish all time list for the 200m with a 200m personal best of 20.81 while also being ranked second on the 400m Irish all time list with an impressive best of 45.58 – just behind David Gillick. If McKee runs even close to his 2012 form he will certainly be on track to abolish the Masters Indoor 200m & 400m records.
A week’s recovery will have to suffice for 2013 Masters Cross Country Champion Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers AC) who will also be aiming to strike double gold in the 3000m and 1500m this weekend in Athlone.
2013 National Combined event Champion Isabella Breslin (Lifford) will be taking part in the 60m, high jump and long jump looking to better her seasons bests which she set at the Indoor Combined Events Championships. In the 60m, high jump and long jump, Breslin will once again face up against St. Joseph’s A.C ‘s Verena Fenlon who came second at the Combined Events and will be looking to once again make the podium. Shauna Carlin is also likely to put up a fight to make the podium coming second in last years 60m in a time of 8.61.
The V9 category sees two entrants, last year’s 3km Walk champion Will Norbert (NIMAA) and Ernest Caffery (Ballina A.C.) who will be exercising his talents across a wide range of events including the high and long jump, shot putt and sprint events. Micheal O’Beirne (Dundrum AC) will be the sole competitor in the V10 category looking to improve his personal bests while competing in the V10 long jump and shot putt.
Rumoured to be a fast track, AIT Arena will provide the perfect location for Master athletes aiming to reach top form ahead of the European Master’s Indoor Championships scheduled for the 19th-24th of March in San Sebastian, Spain.
