Ciara Ginty and Christina Desmond are through to the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships and Olympic Youth qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Both boxers, competing for the second time in 24 hours, are now just one win each away from claiming at least a bronze medal and an automatic place at the 2014 Olympic Youth Games in China.

Ginty, the current AIBA World Youth champion, came from behind to beat Russian Youth champion Anastasia Nesmiyanov on a split decision in the lightweight class.

Nesmiyanova took the first two rounds, but Ginty, who boxes out of the Geesala BC in Mayo, came storming back to win the final two frames and tie the bout. When it went back to the judges she got the nod on a split.

She’ll now meet Italay’s Monica Floridia, who beat England’s Sophie Coleburn this morning, on Monday.

Desmond, Macroom BC, Cork, forced Albulena Gubetini of Kosovo into two standing counts in the final round. Two big lefts from the Macroom southpaw did the business. The final scores read 39-36,39-36, and – 38-38 – to Desmond.

Desmond will now face Poland’s Elizbieta Wojcik in a battle of the 2013 AIBA World Youth silver medallists on Monday. Both women reached the 2013 welterweight (Desmond) and middleweight finals at the AIBA 2013 World Youth Women’s Championships.

Luke Thomas bowed out after dropping a unanimous decision to Ramil Gadzhyiev of the Ukraine in the middleweight class this afternoon.

Thomas had some good moments in the latter part of the second round of today’s encounter. The Cork orthodox forced Gadzhyiev back with some solid shots.

But there was no denying the Ukrainian, who has the look of a young man that will be there or thereabouts when the medals are being handed out,on the day.

Brendan Irvine,Johnny Joyce and Cormac Long will be in action n Sofia on Saturday.
