Ireland’s squad for next month’s AIBA World Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria has been confirmed.
Johnny Joyce beat Caomhin Hynes on a split decision in Friday’s 69kg box-off at Dublin’s National Stadium to complete the 12-strong team.
The AIBA World Youth Championships will act as the only qualifier for August’s Youth Olympic in China.
The top five – the semi-finalists and the quarter-finalist who was beaten by the eventual gold medallist – male boxers in each of the ten weight classes in Sofia will qualify for China.
The top four – the semi-finalists – female boxers in the three weight classes will qualify.
Theoretically, a nation can qualify 13 boxers for the Youth Olympics from the World Youths. However, each nation is restricted to five boxers (three-males, two females) for China.
In the event of a nation surpassing the qualification quota in Sofia, it is up to the country concerned to select their five-strong team.
A record 105 countries, including Ireland, have registered to compete in Sofia.
Team Ireland are currently in training camp at the National Stadium and will fly out to Sofia on April 10th.
Ryan Burnett won gold for Ireland at the 2010 Olympic Youth Games in Singapore. Burnett qualified by virtue of winning silver at the 2010 AIBA World Youth Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Joe Ward claimed gold in Baku to qualify for Singapore, but he lost out in his first fight at the Youth Olympics to Australia’s Damien Hooper, who he beat in the World Youth final. Ward fractured his right hand in the first round of the Olympic Youth bout.
Burnett beat Azzeri light-fly Salman Alizida, who beat Burnett in the World Youth final, in the Olympic Youth final.
This is the first time that women will have taken part in the Youth Olympics and with a three strong squad that includes World Junior champion Ciara Ginty and Macroom’s Christina Desmond who took silver in last year’s World Youth event hopes of success in Sofia will be high.
