Boxing fans in and around Dublin are in for a treat tonight when a strong Irish Army squad takes on Ireland A at the National Stadium.
Multiple Irish Elite champions David Oliver Joyce and Ross Hickey meet in Friday’s Ireland Senior A Team clash with the Irish Army at Dublin’s National Stadium.
Joyce, the 2009 European Union champion, and Hickey, a bronze medalist at the 2008 European Championships, cross swords at light-welter in a top class 14-bout card.
Former Elite champion Roy Sheahan, a gold medallist at the 2007 European Union Championships, lines out for the Army versus Thomas Roohan at the South Circular Road venue.
The Riverstown BC (Cork) pair of David Roche, who captained the Irish Youth side in 2012, and Rory O’Donoghue will also be in action at the home of Irish boxing.
The Army are building up toward the 2013 World Military Games, which will be held at a venue and date to be confirmed later this year.
Cork heavyweight Patrick O’Shea , boxing out of the Sunnyside BC on Leeside, claimed silver at the 2010 World Military Games in the USA, while Henry Coyle (Geesala BC) won gold at the 2006 edition. Coyle has since switched codes.
Chris Phelan, who lost out of London 2012 bronze medallist Michael Conlan in the 2012 Elite final and Bryan Brosnan have withdrawn from Friday’s meeting because of illness and injury.
The duo have been replaced on the Army panel by Noel Sommers – who will meet Beijing Olympian and 2008 European bronze medallist John Joe Joyce – and Barry McKenna.
John Joyce, Ciaran O’Griofa, Des Kenny, Anto Mahon, Robert Carty, Terry Garland, John Tyrell and Noel Sommers will also line out for a strong looking Army panel at the weekend.
“We have a lot of world class quality in our side with Ross Hickey, Roy Sheahan, Chris Phelan and David Roche and Rory O’Donoghue and more, said Army coach Paul Thompson, a seven-time Irish champion boxing out of the Transport BC.
“Our focus is on the World Military Games this year. Friday’s meeting with the Irish A team is part of our preparations and we’re looking forward to working closely with the IABA in the build up to the Games.”
Boxing begins at 7.30pm tonight.
