Good news today for boxing clubs in Northern Ireland following the success of Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan in London 2012.This has resulted in greater than ever interest in boxing in the North and added to that there has been a massive increase in women participating since Katie Taylor’s Gold for Ireland in London and her many other international triumphs.
Sport NI has followed this up with the launch of their ‘Pound for Pound’ Investment fund.
The Pound for Pound Boxing Investment Programme is specifically targeted at addressing the strategic facility needs of boxing clubs that operate at the core of deprived communities across the north of Ireland, and despite this, continue to deliver sporting success.
Over the period 2012-2015, Sport Northern Ireland has committed Lottery funding for the development of boxing facilities across the north of Ireland. The capital programme will be delivered in the following two phases:
Small Grants Programme – for funding up to £30,000
Large Grants Programme – for funding between £30,001 – £200,000
Building surveys of all boxing clubs that expressed an interest in capital development are currently being carried out and will form the basis of each club’s application for funding.
The application process will be carried out in two stages. The Stage 1 Application Form asks for club and primary contact information and essential governance information.
The success of such as Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan in London 2012 has resulted in greater than ever interest in boxing in the North and added to that there has been a massive increase in women participating since Katie Taylor’s Gold in London and many other international triumphs.
There are already some fine female prospects in the North ready for next year’s Commonwealth Games when for the first time women’s boxing (albeit only 3 weights) is included. With such as Christine Gargan, Michaela Walsh, Sarah Close and Nicole Meli to name but four
doing very well internationally there is huge further potential and these Lottery funding grants will be welcome across all communities.
