The IABA has set up an  Elite Competition at the National Stadium in Dublin this weekend -and next  - to assist with their selection process for the 2013 AIBA World Elite Men’s Championships taking place  in Almaty, Kazakhstan in October.

The Elite Competition begins this Friday (August 16th) evening at Dublin’s National Stadium at 7pm.

As we said here on SportsNewsIreland last month, John Joe Nevin, Jason Quigley, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan, gold and silver medallists at the 2013 European Elite Championships, have already been selected for the Irish team for Kazakhstan.

The IABA will hand out the 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 81kg, 91kg and 91+kg Irish vests for Almaty after the Elite Competition.

Insofar as the remaining places on Team Ireland are concerned, current Irish Senior champions taking part in the Elite Competition have received byes into the finals.

So Sean McComb, Ross Hickey, Adam Nolan and Tommy McCarthy being  the current 60kg, 64kg, 69kg and 91kg champions are already through to the finals.

The Irish super-heavyweight title is technically vacant, while Joe Ward, the current light-heavyweight champion, will not weigh-in for the Elite Competition.

Ward, the 2011 European Elite champion, picked up a knee injury at the 2013 European Elite Championships in Belarus in June. The Moate BC southpaw has made steady progress from the injury and is ‘almost’  back to full fitness.

There is no guarantee of course that the winner of each weight in the Elite Competitions being held WILL be the ones chosen for Almaty. This is a tournament which according to the IABA  will “assist” with the selection process.

In addition to Ward’s absence,  Ray Moylette, also a gold medal winner at the 2011 European Championships, has picked up an ankle injury in sparring and he too  is out of the Elite Competition.

Boxing begins at 7pm on Friday. The finals will be held on August 23rd.

The 2013 AIBA World Elite Men’s Championships, the 17th edition of the tournament since Havana, Cuba in 1974, will be held betweenOctober 11th/27th in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Saturday’s (August 17th) bouts are provisionally scheduled for 2pm (to be confirmed after Friday’s weigh-in).
