Boxing: Nevin, Quigley, Barnes and Conlan set for World’s in Almaty – others face ‘box off’ in August
The I.A.B.A (likely soon to be renamed the Boxing Association of Ireland ) has nominated four Team Ireland boxers for the 2013 AIBA World Elite Boxing Championships to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The remain six slots will be decided following a special tournament to be held at the National Stadium on August 16th/17th and 23rd.
The pre-selected quartet are the European Gold (John Joe Nevin and Jason Quigley) and Silver medallists (Paddy Barnes and Mick Conlan). Among those who will be involved in the ‘box off’ tournament are Joe Ward, Adam Nolan, Darren O’Neill and Eric Donovan plus numerous National Elite champions.
Nevin and Quigley both struck Gold at the 2013 Europeans in Minsk,Belarus earlier this year. Nevin, the Olympic Silver medallist in London 2012 will be aiming for a third successive World Elite medal and is currently ranked no.1 in the AIBA World Rankings for July.
“We won two medals at the last two World Championships and we’ll be looking to improve on that in Kazakhstan later this year”, head coach Billy Walsh told ‘The Irish Times’ . “The squad had a great European Championships and with a bit of luck we could have won more than two gold and two silver medals and finished on top of the medals table.”
As we reported here yesterday, the AIBA have confirmed that the 2015 World Elite Championships will be held in Doha, Qatar and it is expected that that event will be the main qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, though that has yet to be formally confirmed. The next AIBA World Elite for Women is scheduled for Edmonton,Canada in 2014 where Katie Taylor will be aiming for a fifth World crown in a row.
