Cork v Wexford: live score commentary updates

Updated: July 14, 2012

We have live score commentary and team news from Cork’s clash with Wexford on Saturday at 5pm.

Semple Stadium in Thurles is the venue this Saturday for the meeting of Cork and Wexford in the third round of the All Ireland SHC Qualifiers. Throw in 5pm.

Cork enter this game in good spirits after a 7 point victory over Offaly last weekend. The team is really starting to come together. Jimmy Barry-Murphy has expertly blended in some new talent with the more established players.

The qualifiers are an ideal place for this young side to build momentum and a victory over Wexford on Saturday evening would earn them a quarter-final place. The emerging stars are all in top form. Team captain Pat Horgan is finally starting to deliver the kind of performances that his rich talent demands and he has been ably assisted in recent outings by Páidí O’Sullivan, Conor Lehane, Darren Sweetman and Lorcan McLoughlin.

Wexford are rank outsiders to upset Cork so there will be very little pressure on their shoulders as a result. Liam Dunne is in the first year of a 3 year term and he has introduced a number of young players this season in the shape of Jack Guiney, Eoin Moore and U21 captain Diarmuid O’ Keefe. Stephen Banville has earned a recall on the back of some excellent club form and will provide some badly needed experience and physical power to the forward line. Darren Stamp, Keith Rossiter and Diarmuid Lyng are the key players that Wexford will look to for inspiration.

With a quarter-final place up for grabs this could be a reasonably competitive game. But overall Cork are the more balanced side and they should advance to the knockout stages.

Verdict: Cork
