Cork beat Waterford to reach All-Ireland hurling semi-final on the 12th of August, against Galway
The rebels started well and they raced into an early lead with Pat Horgan and Jamie Coughlan to the fore up front. Coughlan’s 16th minute goal had put Cork into a strong position, but Waterford responded and their talisman John Mullane came out the field and had a huge impact on the game, setting up a number of scores.
Despite having less of the overall play Michael Ryan’s side only trailed by one point at the interval. The scoreboard read Cork 1-09 – Waterford 0-11.
For long periods of the second half Waterford dominated the play and with fourteen minutes to go they had forged a three point lead. Substitute Eoin McGrath had a great goal chance, however he fumbled the ball and a huge opportunity was squandered. It was a huge turning point.
Jimmy Barry Murphy’s charges took advantage of this huge let off and suddenly the quality of their bench was beginning to tell. Darren Sweetnam set up several attacks and livewire Cathal Naughton landed two trademark scores to edge his side in front.
The ageless Ó hAilpín and team captain Pat Horgan landed late points to leave three between the sides. Waterford tried desperately to find a goal that would force a replay but the Cork defence stood firm.
Waterford will feel this was a game they let slip but once again the lack of class up front (bar Mullane) was the big issue. The Cork bench was key in the end and the quality players introduced in the last quarter swung the game in their favour. However huge improvement will be required if they are to trouble Galway in the semi-final.
