Roscommon edged out Wicklow in a thrilling clash at the top of the table, in this Allianz National Football League game played in Aughrim on Sunday.
The sides were level twice inside the opening few minutes and Roscommon battled well despite playing against the strong breeze. Wicklow then opened up a gap and went 0-4 to 0-2 in front. They stretched that to 3 points before Roscommon hit the first of their three goals to tie the game. A free form Rogers then gave the visitors the lead 1-3 to 0-6. Roscommon then added a point before Wicklow scored a goal. Donie Shine then scored a fine point for Roscommon just before halftime.
Roscommon were awarded a penalty just after the restart and Karl Mannion converted to restore the Rossies lead. However, Wicklow hit back with a goal and a point to go two up once more. A third point for the Garden County made it 2-9 to 2-6. Wicklow added two further points to lead by five and at this stage they looked like winning the tie. A Roscommon point then tied the scores at 2-12 apiece.
A free from Rogers gave the visitors the lead before Wicklow drew level again. Roscommon scored a crucial goal but Wicklow hit back with a well taken point. At 3-13 to 2-15 this game was set to go right to the final whistle but each side could just manage a single point each late on and Roscommon held out for the victory.
