The Galway Senior Hurling Championship kicks off this weekend with main contenders Portumna, Clarinbridge and Loughrea all have a bye this weekend.
The betting market has it as Portumna’s year and is openly dismissing last year’s Galway championship and All Ireland winners Clarinbridge of a repeat at 10/1. A post hangover from their heroics in March may see Clarinbridge struggle to get involved this season and punters having nibbling at St Thomas’s to win their group at 2/1 into 7/4.
Athenry have suffered from the recession seeing many of their best players heading off on the emigration ships and will take a few seasons to blood the youngsters back into action and are dismissed by John Mulholland’s at 20/1
Loughrea are perhaps a generous price at 16/1 after slaying Portumna in the Semi Finals but it’s really a case of expecting Portumna to use the disappointment of last season to spur them back to victory. They have all the big weapons like Joe Canning, Damien Hayes and Ollie Canning; it’s really hard to bet against them even if 4/7 is not exactly working man’s price. They were 1/3 in 2009 and 2010 so perhaps theirs value in the price for the money buyers.
