Longford claimed local bragging rights when they beat neighbours Westmeath, for the second year in row in the ESB Leinster MFC at Pearse Park last night.
Robbie Smyth helped himself to a goal and two points as Longford ran out 6 points winner’s by a margin of 1-10 to 07 points.
The reigning champions who will now face Wicklow next Tuesday for a shot at the quarter-finals.
The game was tighter then the score line suggests with just 3 points separating the sides early in the second half, and Westmeath drew the side’s levels with scores from Lorcan Dolan, David McCormack and Robbie Henshaw.
However Robbie Smyth penalty, after Killian Daly had taken down Barry McKeon and Paddy Holloway late red-card ended any hope of a Westmeath victory
