John McAreavey has been named in Down’s 32 strong panel for the Ulster Senior Football. Championship.
McAreavey tragically hit the headlines when his wife, Michaela McAreavey, daughter of Tyrone manager Mickey Harte was murdered earlier in the year. He made his senior debut in 2008, when he scored 2-3 against Donegal. He also appeared as a substitute in the All-Ireland quarter-final against Wexford at Croke Park.
The player has been in excellent form for his club Tullylish in recent weeks. He scored 1-12 against Newry Mitchels recently and has been catching the eye with his performances.
Down PRO Paul Rooney said: “John is back in the squad. He has been playing some unreal football of late. I saw him score 1-12 for his club in a league match recently, but that is not a once-off, he has been doing that for a while. I think he is enjoying his football and I’m sure it helps to take his mind off everything that happened.”
