Last year’s All Ireland finalists Down welcome Leitrim to Newry for the second round of the football qualifiers this Saturday afternoon. James McCartan’s men were surprisingly knocked out of the Ulster championship by Armagh in their first game of the campaign. It will be a long road back to Croke Park for the Mourne men,and the journey begins this weekend.

With the greatest respect to Leitrim, the draw has been kind to Down, and they could hardly have asked for an easier task than a home tie against the Connacht minnows. A victory this weekend should get the confidence back in the camp and help them on their way towards round three. There are certainly enough quality footballers in the side to suggest that they are capable of making the latter stages of this season’s championship yet again.

Leitrim beat Sligo in Markievickz Parkin their first game of the Connacht championship but proved no match for Roscommon on their next start. Having failed to put up much of a fight against the Rossies, it is difficult to see Micky Moran’s side go one better against Down. This looks a game where handicap punters will be out in force and anything around the 8-10 point mark should easily be covered by the home team.

The Connacht side were critical of pundits for writing them off against Sligo in their clash last month, but in truth, they are taking on a different class of opposition this weekend. Anything other than a convincing Down victory would be the biggest shock of the weekend.
