County Laois host UCD in the O’Byrne Cup this Sunday January 8 at Crettyard and Laois boss Justin McNulty will be under huge pressure to ensure that his team is fighting fit following the winter break. Throw in 2pm.
Donie Kingston, who has decided not to throw in his lot with Laois this year, may appear for the students which will add an extra edge to the encounter.
Two other players who have apparently withdrawn from the panel are Heath players, Denis Booth and Daithí Carroll.
Carroll featured in 10 of Laois’ 15 games last year and was the team’s fourth highest scorer with 1-12. Booth too had a decent run with the team playing in nine games.
Colm Murphy and Kilmacud Crokes duo Craig Dias and Rory O’Carroll are involved with the UCD squad to face Laois.
The O’Byrne Cup has provided a stern test for Laois in recent years, with the county exiting in the first round in 2009 at the hands of DCU students.
A year later Laois were once again faced by students, this time from DIT and came away with a win, but the campaign came to a halt the following week when Kildare defeated them.
