UCC 1-12 DCU 0-14
UCC caused a huge surprise when they defeated a star-studded DCU side in the Sigerson Cup quarter-final at Belfield on Thursday.
The Dublin college were the hot favourites to win the competition and had a number of big name players in their lineup. Despite the absence of Donie Shine, Bryan Cullen and David Kelly, it was still widely anticipated that the holders would prove too strong for Billy Morgan’s men.
However, UCC got stuck in from the outset and were not about to sit back and admire the classy style of their opponents. Although Donegal’s Michael Murphy hit too early points, the Cork side battled for every ball and were never going to allow the favourites to build up a head of steam.
DCU had plenty of first half possession but failed to make it count, and with Barry O’Driscoll and Daithi Casey to the fore for UCC, the underdogs went in at the break holding a 0-7 to 0-6 advantage.
The crucial score of the game arrived in the 52nd minute when Barry O’Driscoll found JB Spillane, who fired to the net to give UCC a vital advantage. DCU stepped up their efforts soon after and both Michale Lyng and Paddy Andrews went close but luck seemed to be on the side of the Cork men and they held tough.
It was all DCU in the final minutes as they tried desperately for the score they needed to draw the game, but UCC’s defence were strong and they never looked like giving away this hard earned victory.
