Mayo claimed back to back FBD League titles, with an easy ten point victory over the students of NUIG at McHale Park on Friday night.
The home side never looked in any danger of losing the tie and those who took the odds of 1/3 never had a moments worry. The game was slow to get going and it took six minutes before Shane Moran registered the first score of the night for the students. Alan Freeman replied with a point from a placed ball for Mayo. The same player then pointed a second free and kicked a fine score from play to leave the inter-county side leading by 0-3 to 0-1.
Neil Douglas responded for the college to narrow the gap to a single point but then the favourites really stepped up a gear. Andy Moran hit two in succession to stretch the lead out to three points, before Conor Mortimer got in on the act. The latter scored a brace to leave Mayo in front 0-7 to 0-2. Fiachra Deasmhunaigh scored for NUIG in added time, but Moran hit back for Mayo, leaving five between the teams at the break.
The students once again opened the scoring after the restart,Deasmhunaigh kicking over a nice score to leave it 0-8 to 0-4. Conor Mortimer and Barry Moran then pointed for Mayo to leave the score at 0-10 to 0-4. Kevin McLoughlin got in on the act and his point left seven between the sides. Conor Mortimer tapped over a close range free to leave it 0-12 to 0-4. Mortimer kicked his fifth point after Dillon was brought down close to the college goals.
The game was over as a contest at this stage and Mayo had the title safely in their grasp. Lee Keegan raced upfield and kicked a late point to leave it 0-14 to 0-4 and a ten point win for Mayo.
