Laois claimed some early season silverware with a comprehensive nine point victory over Wexford in the Bord na Mona O Byrne Shield at Wexford Park.
A dominant first half display meant that the result was never in doubt as the away side ran out comfortable winners 1-15 to 1-6.
Playing with the wind the O Moore County got off to the best possible start as Portlaoise’s Paul Cahillane put them a goal up after just five minutes.
From that moment on they were relentless and threatened to embarrass Wexford taking a 1-5 to 0-2 lead after 25 minutes.
A goal just before half time from Paddy Byrne gave the hope, but Laois continued to dominate, with David Conway in particular scoring at will. Conway bagged four points in the first half as Laois led by as they led by 1-9 to 1-3.
For Wexford the comeback was always going to be a difficult ask but they never came close to testing Laois. The relied exclusively on the boot of Ben Brosnan for scores with substitute Lyng the only other player managing to score a point.
Laois had no such problems with scores from Ross Munnelly and Darren Strong putting them seven points clear with 15 minutes left.
Just for good measure, Damien O’Connor and substitute Stephen O’Leary added late scores providing the perfect confidence booster going into their NFL opener against Mayo next week.
