The inaugural International Throws Festival took place in Templemore on Saturday.
The event organized by Athletics Ireland and host club Templemore AC saw athletes from Ireland, Switzerland, Iceland and Wales compete against each other. A full program featuring all 4 throwing events were on the cards.
Anita Fitzgibbon (Dundrum South Dublin AC) threw 52.97m on her first attempt to set a new Irish Record in the women’s javelin event. This broke the old mark held by Jennifer O’Sullivan, which stood at 50.10m. The throw was also good enough for overall victory in the competition.
Other Irish athletes impressing on the day included new recruit Conor McCullough (Crusaders AC). McCullough won the men’s discus event with a throw of 46.95m and backed this up with another win in the hammer 66.95m. Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers AC) launched the shot putt out to 16.09m to win the event comfortable.
Clare Fitzgerald (Tralee Harriers AC) was also on the double in Templemore, by winning both the shot putt and discus events. Fitzgerald threw 13.41m to take the shot and launched the discus out to 48.24m, to win by over 5m.
