Anthony Cunningham’s tactical nous in outmanouevring one of the best hurling managers of all time was recognised when the Galway manager was named Philips Sports manager of the month for July.
The two time All-Ireland winning hurler was rewarded for his genius in delivering a Galway side primed for the game of their lives who demolished reigning champions Kilkenny in the Leinster final last month.
In his debut season as manager the St Thomas’s man has guided the Tribesmen to their first All-Ireland final for seven years. Last year he was in charge of the county’s All-Ireland winning U21 side.
Before that, Cunningham had enjoyed considerable success as a football manager. He was in charge of Roscommon side St. Brigids for their three in a row county titles and the 2006 Connacht crown. He repeated the trick with Westmeath’s Garrycastle and guided them to their first ever Leinster title in 2011.
