DCU 2-11 Longford 0-12
DCU scored two lucky goals in the second half of their O’Byrne Cup clash with Longford, and it was enough to guarantee a five-point victory and help book their place in the semi finals.
Despite the win, the Dublin college were the poorer side for much of the game, as Glen Ryan’s men really made them fight. Led by Sean McCormack, the inter-county side held a one point advantage at the break and but for the concession of the soft goals they may well have won this contest. McCormack was outstanding for the losers and hit eight points as his team went down fighting.
David Kelly, Dean Rock and Gary Sweeney scored early points to give DCU a three point lead. They should have maintained that advantage but gave away very scorable frees and were punished by Longford and the accuracy of McCormack. Longford should have had a goal before halftime but Colm Smith’s shot was well saved by DCU’s Michael Boyle.
It was DCU who scored the first goal of the match in the 38th minute. Martin McElhinney’s shot hit the upright and Jack Brady was fastest to react and fisted the ball to the net. However, Longford showed their spirit and scored four unanswered points to go back in front. It was not enough at the finish though, as DCU scored 1-4 in the dying minutes and Donal Smith’s goal finally sealed the tie.
