Kerry’s misery continued as they fell to Kildare, Cork escaped Newry with a valuable win and Tyrone overcame 13-man Donegal on an action-packed Sunday in the National Football League.
Kildare heaped more pressure on Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s Kerry side as they won 2-8 to 0-12 points in Newbridge. Goals from Seánie Johnston and John Doyle proved to be the difference as a wasteful Kerry side fell to their third successive defeat. Kerry now sit bottom of Division 1 and look destined for relegation. Kildare join Dublin and Tyrone at the top of the table with three wins from three.
Tyrone continued their winning run with a 1-13 to 0-12 win over Donegal. In what was a poor affair, Donegal finished with just thirteen men due to the sending off of both Michael Murphy (first-half) and Neil Gallagher. Goalkeeper Niall Morgan was the hero for Tyrone, scoring two long-range frees and saving a first-half Michael Murphy penalty. Stephen O’ Neil scored the Tyrone goal.
This puts Tyrone in a commanding position in Division I, joining Dublin and Kildare at the top of the table. Donegal remain on two points with one win and two losses from their three outings.
Cork finally kick-started their league campaign with a 3-12 to 1-17 win away to Down, thanks to a last-minute Ciaran Sheehan goal. The Rebels were trailing by two points in Newry, until Sheehan snatched a win late on. The result give Cork a much-needed win as they register their first win of the campaign at the third time of asking. Down’s loss mean they join Kerry at the foot of the table with three losses from three games.
Dublin’s win over Mayo means they maintain their perfect start to the campaign. Dublin, Tyrone and Kildare are all but assured places in the semi-finals, while it looks like the final semi-final spot is a shoot-out between Cork and Donegal. Remarkably, Kerry look like they could be destined for life in Divsion II , with one of Down or Mayo looking likely to join them.
