Monaghan overcame a lacklustre Sligo side, as Roscommon drew with Wicklow in Division III of the National Football League.
Kieran Hughes was the star for Monaghan as they overcame Sligo 1-12 to 0-07. Monaghan led 0-06 to 0-2 at half-time and the results was never really in doubt. A goal from Christopher McGuinness was followed by points from Beggan, Hughes and Freeman to give Monaghan an easy win.
Roscommon and Wicklow drew 0-13 to 1-10 to condemn Wickow to the bottom of the Division III table. Roscommon scored the first two points of the game through Conor Daly and Kevin Higgins but Wicklow replied through three John McGrath frees. The sides continued to trade blows, with Roscommon leading 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time. Donie Smith was impressive for Roscommon, who led by four points at one stage. However, Wicklow snatched a point in the dying minutes with a last-gasp goal. McGraynor was their most impressive player, finishing with a perfect record from placed balls.
Monaghan’s win puts them level with Cavan in second place in Division III, on four points. Fermanagh lead the way with five, while Wicklow’s draw keeps them at the bottom. Roscommon and Antrim are in 4th and 5th place, respectively, in what is a very tight division. It is hard to call the potential outcomes on both sides of the table, as the race for promotion heats up.
