Form

Down will be looking to pick up their first win of the campaign, following a disappointing start. They have lost all three of their games so far, but their performances merit much more. Narrow defeats to Tyrone and Donegal were followed by a heart-breaking injury-time loss to Cork. James McCartan’s side desperately need the two points on Saturday as they look to drag themselves out of the relegation mire and rescue their league season.

Mayo started their league campaign brightly with a win over a Kerry team that are in disarray at present. However, bacl-to-back defeats has seen the Royals slip down the table. They have two points after three games and a loss on Saturday would see them enter a relegation battle.

Team News

The Down team is yet to be released but there should be no real surprises. Donal O’ Hare and Benny Coulter will be part of a formidable forward line. The Mayo defence will need to work hard to restrict the opportunites given to O’ Hare and Coulter. The Down team should line up as follows:

Down: McVeigh, McCartan, McArdle, Boyle, Mallon, Carr, Quinn, King, McKernan, Laverty, Poland, McComiskey, O`Hare, Harrison, Coulter.

Mayo manager have made just one change to the team that lost in Dublin, with Cathal Carolan replacing Jason Gibbons. Aidan O’ Shea switches to midfield to partner Barry Morgan. Enda Varley and Michael Conroy continue in the corner forward spots.

Mayo: O`Malley, Barrett, Cafferkey, Higgins, Keegan, Vaughan, Boyle, Moran, O`Shea, McLoughlin, Feeney, Carolan, Varley, Doherty, Conroy.

Players to Watch

Down’s Donal O’ Hare scored nine points against Cork last time out. If he is afforded any space by the Mayo defence, he will punish them.

Mayo’s Michael Conroy is equally as effective for Mayo and he will have a big part to play on Saturday.
