Kildare recorded a 2-13 to 2-8 victory over Derry in Newbridge on Sunday afternoon in the Allianz NFL division 2.
In even more positive news for Kildare, Dermot Earley made a late substitute appearance in the game, after being sidelined by a cruciate ligament injury for the past two seasons.
Derry trailed by two at the break with James Kavanagh (two) and Eoghan O’Flaherty (three) helping the hosts to a 0-8 to 0-6 lead.
Conleth Gilligan reduced the deficit to just one point early in the second half before two points from Johnny Doyle and another from Eoghan O’Flaherty opened up a 0-11 to 0-7 lead for the hosts.
Skipper John Doyle then converted a penalty for Kildare, but goals from Sean Leo McGoldrick and Caolan O’Boyle brought a resilient Derry side back to within a point.
But their dream of a remarkable comeback was halted by Alan Smith’s 64th minute goal.
Dermot Earley scored the final point of the game to crown a satisfactory afternoon for Kieran McGeeney’s side.
The Lilywhites now move onto four points, after winning their last two games, while Derry remain joint bottom with Westmeath on just two points.
Derry must pick up at least two wins from their remaining games against Meath, Westmeath and Louth as they seek to avoid relegation into Division Three.
