A ‘man of the match performance’ at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey ,saw Michael Murphy lead Glenswilly to victory 3-19 to 2-6 against Killybegs in the Donegal county final.
Donegal Senior Football Championship Final:
Glenswilly 3-19 Killybegs 2-6 (FT)
Two years after their first title it was a second county crown for Murphy’s men, who had some 16 points to spare at the final whistle against a gallant Killybegs side seeking a first title since 1996.
Murphy had led Ireland to success at Kingspan Breffni Park on Saturday night but showed little signs of fatigue this afternoon thus rounding off a fine weekend for the Donegal and Ireland captain.
Today he scored from a penalty as well as adding five points after Christopher Murrin’s opening goal had shocked the favourites – his long ball ended up in the back of the net completely deceiving Philip O’Donnell.
The Killybegs side bounced back from that shock, and led with a second Hugh McFadden goal led. They were in front 2-0 to 1-2 with but fifteen minutes on the clock.
By half time the Glen’ had only a point to spare 1-7 to 2-3 but with both Murphy and Neil Gallagher in superb form they dominated the second period with not only goals from Gallagher and Ciaran Bonner but several well taken points from Gary McFadden.
So tonight the Maguire Cup is on its way back to the Glen’ who now prepare for an Ulster club quarter final tie with St.Galls. Today though it was a day for Gary McDaid’s men- and Michael Murphy in particular – to savour.
