On Tuesday morning, the GAA announced their two players of the month for July in both gaelic football and hurling.
The two lucky players were Cavan’s Cian Mackey and Dublin’s Paul Ryan who will each scoop a cash prize of €1,000.
Ryan’s selection was heavily based on his outstanding performances in the Leinster SHC Final against Galway which saw the Dubs claim their first provincial title in 52 years.
His personal tally on the day of 2-7 meant that the Cosmopolitans were able to edge the encounter, proving that it helps to have a star performer in your team.
Mackey’s excellent performances all-season culminated in a stellar display against London in a qualifier that saw them advance to a quarter final against Munster champions Kerry. Although they lost the encounter, they can be proud of their efforts, and Mackey’s personal award will prove some consolation.
GAA commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Liam O’ Neill said: “It’s been an incredible summer to date in both championships in no small part thanks to the breakthrough victories of counties starved of success.
“Dublin’s hurling emergence in Leinster was as impressive as any and Paul Ryan played his part in that win with an eye-catching corner forward display.
“On the football front, Cavan’s run to the last eight of the Championship mobilised their huge support and caught the imagination of the county and Cian Mackey was consistently outstanding in their run. I congratualte both players and remind them that there is no higher compliment than being honoured by your peers.”
The attention of GAA aficionados up and down the country will now turn to this weekend’s action as Dublin take on Cork in the SHC on Sunday.
