Updated: October 9, 2012

The lead up to the 2013 Sigerson & Fitzgibbon cups the Irish Daily Mail Higher Education GAA competitions commence on Tuesday October 9 with Division 1 of the Irish Daily Mail Fresher Football Leagues the first of 13 league competitions to throw-in. 173 teams are entered in the leagues with over 2,500 students taking part in 390 fixtures between now and the end of the year on over 50 Higher Education campuses throughout the four provinces.

Higher Education competitions have seen tremendous growth in recent years, particularly at non-elite level, with some Universities and Institutes now fielding up to four fresher’s and senior teams catering for all levels of player. Many students find the opportunity to get involved with their HE Club as a helpful way to integrate into campus life.

In the second year of their partnership, Comhairle Ardoideachais and the Irish Daily Mail hope to build on the foundations made in 2011/12. A season of healthy competitions culminated in an epic centenary Irish Daily Mail Fitzgibbon Cup final in the Mardyke, Co. Cork with a nail-biting finish.
The 2012/13 season sees Trinity College return to the Irish Daily Mail Sigerson Cup and Division 1 League for the first time since 2005. After claiming an Irish Daily Mail Senior Division 1 League double last season, University College Cork will once again be the club to beat in both codes.

In December, attention will turn to the Irish Daily Mail Higher Education Championship Draws. This year’s Sigerson Cup Finals Weekend will be hosted by Athlone IT, while the Fitzgibbon Cup Finals Weekend will be held in Galway by GMIT. Dates TBC.

Paul Henderson, Managing Director, Associated Newspapers Ireland said: “As proud sponsor of the Higher Education Leagues and Championships, we are looking forward to building on the success of last year.”
