Updated: December 14, 2011

Comhairle Ardoideachais and Cumann Lúthchleas Gael have announced that the Irish Daily Mail as the new competition sponsor of all GAA Higher Education competitions for the next three academic years.

The partnership will lead to increased coverage of Third Level games in the newspaper, which already has strong links with the association from its sponsorship of the International Rules Series in 2010 and its continued support of the GAA Museum in Croke Park.

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana welcomed confirmation of the Irish Daily Mail as the new sponsor for the GAA Higher Education Leagues and Championships.

He said: “It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the Irish Daily Mail as our latest GAA sponsor and in working with our Third Level institutions and their students, they will be making a connection with a particularly vibrant section of the Association.

“We worked with the Irish Daily Mail on the 2010 International Rules and saw firsthand the energy and innovation they brought to that partnership. We look forward to more of the same and I am confident our games will benefit enormously from this arrangement.”

Paul Henderson, Managing Director, Associated Newspapers Ireland said:
“We are honoured to announce The Irish Daily Mail as official sponsor of all GAA Higher Education Leagues and Championships. We add this to our recent sponsorship of the 2010 Irish Daily Mail International Rules Series and our continued patronage of the GAA Croke Park Museum. We know how important commercial support is to one of the vital arteries of our national games and at The Irish Daily Mail we are delighted to lend our support both financially and more importantly in raising the profile of these players through our newspapers for the next three years”.

The Irish Daily Mail GAA Higher Education Leagues commenced on October 4 with 358 fixtures taking place before the break for exams last Friday. 12 league champions have been crowned with two finals falling foul of the inclement weather last week and re-fixed for mid-January.

The Irish Daily Mail GAA Higher Education Championships begin on January 31 and after today’s draws, details of all fixtures will be confirmed and circulated later in the week.
The Irish Daily Mail will follow the progress of the Championships with previews of the competitions and big games, extended match reports, and campus corner, a colourful weekly column from John Harrington every Tuesday.

On the back of last year’s Sigerson Cup Centenary celebrations, the 2011/12 season sees the 100th anniversary of the first Fitzgibbon Cup. The semi-finals and finals of the Hurling championships, as well as a number of other special events to mark the centenary (including the announcement of the Irish Daily Mail Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century) will be hosted by University College Cork on March 2/3 in what promises to be a fantastic occasion in the Mardyke Sportsgrounds.

The 2012 Irish Daily Mail GAA Higher Education Football Championship Finals will be hosted by NUI Galway on February 24/25.
