Tyrone has retained the McKenna Cup with a ten point defeat of Monaghan in the Athletic Grounds on Saturday night.

Manager Mickey Harte has now won six McKenna Cup’s during his team at the helm of Tyrone football.

Goals in either half proved the crucial difference in the teams as Monaghan had led the Red Hand County up until the 28 minute mark. An early goal and point from Monaghan’s Paul Finlay had given them a deserved lead early on.

However, Mark Donnelly’s goal set Tyrone on their way and things got better for Mickey Harte’s team when Ronan McNally saw red reducing Monahan’s threat significantly.

The Oriel County had barely time for a breath when Stephen O’Neill struck to the net to hand Tyrone a six point lead going into the break.

The extra man proved fruitful almost immediately after the restart, Donnelly hit Tyrone’s third goal leaving them ten points clear of Monaghan.

Monaghan tried valiantly to stay in touch with Tyrone but the cup was secured when Peter Harte fired home a late penalty.
