McKenna Cup Results: Monaghan hammer Donegal, wins for Tyrone & Fermanagh

Dongeal once again sent out their B side in the McKenna Cup and suffered a 17 point defeat at the hands of Monaghan while Tyrone beat Antrim and Fermangh easily beat St Mary’s.

None of last year’s All-Ireland winning side started and Monaghan were always in control, leading 0-7 to 1-1 at half-time with Adrian Hanlon getting the Donegal goal. Keith McEnaney, Dermot Malone and Darren Hughes scored goals for Monaghan in the second half which saw them run out 17 point winners on a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-05.

“It was a tougher challenge today, with our young lads up against a tough, settled, inter-county team like Monaghan, but there are plenty of positives,” said Donegal manager Jim McGuinness.

Tyrone beat Antrim by six points 2-13 to 1-10 in their Section C clash, Kevin Niblock scored a penalty for Antrim after nine minutes with Peter Harte scoring two goals in the opening half for Tyrone on 6th and 28th minutes.  It was 2-06 to 1-04 at half time with the sides trading 13 points between them in the second half to leave the score at the final whistle 2-13 to 1-10.

Fermanagh had a big win in Section A, where they beat the students of St Mary’s University College 2-15 to 1-5. Paul Ward and Shane McCabe scoring the Fermanagh goals in the first half while Brian Doyle scored 1:01 from wing back for St Marys.
