Padraig Ashe, chairman of the Kildare County Board has resigned his position for personal reasons. The announcement was made at last night’s meeting of the county executive.

Family reasons were believed to be behind Ashe’s surprise announcement which comes just as he begins his second year in the role. However, sources within Kildare blamed clashes over the club versus county debate, and how local matches were being scheduled to allow inter county players to compete.

Ashe was not present at last night’s County Board meeting. The chairman’s decision to step down is certain to add to increased speculation regarding infighting amongst the Lilywhites and looks set to run for a few more weeks at least.

Vice-chairman John McMahon, looks the most likely successor if he decides to run for the vacant post but it may just turn out to be a poison chalice at present and may not interest the latter.
