John Power, brother of Kilkenny senior Richie, was the star on show as St Kieran’s College retained their Leinster Colleges’ senior A hurling title at Nowlan Park.
Power scored 2-6 as his side overcame great rivals Castlecomer Community School for the second time this season. With Kieran’s ahead by just two points (1-6 to 0-7), and the game looking set to go down to the wire, Power took a pass from Diarmuid Cody and fired it to the net to give his side some breathing space. When Cody added goal number three a minute later, the champions were safely on their way to an All Ireland semi final.
Kieran’s had led 1-5 to 0-3 at halftime, with Power getting the goal but Castlecomer stepped it up after the restart and were only two points behind when Kieran’s grabbed the two crucial goals to win the game.
