According to reports in yesterday’s Sunday Independent, the recent run of bad form endured by Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, could have something to do with a rocky patch in his high profile relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

While it had generally been believed that his new Nike golfing equipment was the chief reason the Ulster man was struggling on the golf course, the paper suggests that it may be personal reasons that are behind his current loss of form. The current world number one shocked the golfing world when he walked off the course, after just eight holes of the second round in his defence of the Honda Classic in Florida.
McIlroy blamed a pain in his wisdom tooth pain for the bizarre behaviour, and clearly close to meltdown, he told Irish reporters at the clubhouse that he was having a tough time mentally. This has led The Sunday Independent to draw their own conclusions on the episode.
McIlroy had said: “There’s not much I can say, guys. I’m just not in a good place, mentally.”
If reports are to be believed, McIlroy will make a statement on his current problems at a press conference in Florida on Tuesday. Wozniacki made an early exit from the Malaysian Open last week, suffering an embarrassing defeat to a player ranked 186th in the world. The former world number one Wozniacki claimed she was feeling unwell and had a high temperature.
The duo have courted the media in recent months and always have plenty to say to one another on Twitter, but they have not tweeted each other on the social networking site in several days.
When questioned about their relationship after her defeat last week, Wozniacki replied: “I think that question will be for him to answer.”
Asked if she would accept if McIlroy proposed, she passed off the question, saying: “This is getting personal!”
