Jose Maria Olazabal today laughed off reports that Martin Kaymer wants to withdraw from the Europe team for next month’s Ryder Cup.
Kaymer has seen his form drop dramatically in recent months and recently hinted that he may withdraw from the Ryder Cup if he feels it is best for the team.
Speaking today at his wildcard picks press conference though captain Olazabal said he expects to have the German in his team come September.
“I spoke to Martin recently, we had a little chat on the phone,” said the Spaniard. “He has been working hard since the PGA Championship and he is happy with the work he’s been doing on the driving range.
“Let me get one thing clear, he wants to play. He made that point.”
Padraig Harrington missed out on today’s squad to Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts, and despite Kaymer’s form worry it would take a lot for Olazabal to draft Harrington in.
The 46-year old Europe captain said: “I talked to him last night and I gave it to him pretty straight. I know he is a great player, I have left out some great players.”
“You need to be playing good. It’s as simple as that.”
Olazabal mentioned that former world number one Kaymer will travel to upcoming tournaments in Holland and Italy in a bid to return to form before September’s tournament at Medinah Country Club.
