Tiger Woods three ahead of Rory McIlroy after day one of Abu Dubai Championship

Updated: January 17, 2013

It was a tough day first day for Rory McIlroy using Nike products, he trails Tiger Woods by three shots and is eight shots off the lead.

Tiger woods is 11/1 & Rory McIlroy is 25/1 to win the Abu Dubai Championship

McIlroy and Woods started their round of golf on the 10th hole and things were looking good for the Northern Irish golfer as he birdied the 13th, but that was as good as it got for the world number one as he double bogied the 15th & 3rd and hit a six on the par5 8th. He did get a birdie on the 2nd to help him finish on +3 and eight shots behind the leaders.

“I feel like I was rusty, I drove the ball badly. I just didn’t putt well either. I feel like if I can drive better the putting will improve, its going to be an afternoon with my coach on the driving range” said McIlroy after his round.

Tiger Woods drove atrocious all morning, but his putting was spectacular until the last hole. He was two shots behind McIlroy early as he bogied the 13th compared to McIlroy’s birdie. But the Tiger started to roar and he birdied 15th, 17th and 18th to be -2 at the turn. Then his driver let him down badly on the 1st and 2nd where he dropped shots on both. The former world number one made some super saves over the next six holes before getting a birdie on the 8th to only three putt the ninth to finish the day level par and five shots off the lead.

“Even par was a good score in those conditions, those far ways are so hard to hit. The rough is very deep and fairways are tiny. Not many people are going to hit low today, the weather will be tomorrow so it was all about hanging in there today.” said  Tiger Woods
