Athletics: How the Irish fared in Prague Indoor Grand Prix

There were three Irish athletes competing in the Prague Indoor Grand Prix on Tuesday,. Ciara Everard (UCD AC) and Roseanne Galligan (Newbrige AC) contested the 800m while David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) contested the 3,000m event.

 

In the 800m both Everard and Galligan sat off the fast early pace as the pace maker scorched through the opening 400m in 59 seconds. Everard steadily moved through the field to eventually finish in fourth place in a new season best time of 2.04.02, Galligan finished just behind in seventh place in a time of 2.04.12. The race was won by Jenny Meadows of Great Britain in a time of 2.01.67.

 

McCarthy contested a highly competitive 3,000m event with the leaders going through the opening mile in 4.07; McCarthy made a more conservative start going through the mile in 4.12. There was a mid-race surge by Paul Kipsiele Koech of Kenya with McCarthy struggling to stay with the pace. Koech coasted to victory in a time of 7.47.20 with McCarthy finishing in seventh place in a time of 7.54.39.

 

The Irish team for the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland will be announced on Wednesday, 26th of February.
