Ireland has six boxers ranked in the World’s top 10 as the ‘Amateur’ season draws to a close with the AIBA issuing the year’s final rankings listing.
For a record seventh successive year, Olympic Gold medallist Katie Taylor heads the Women’s 60 kg division ahead of Tajikistan’s (now retired) Mavzuna Chorieva and Brazil’s Adriana Araujo with Olympic Silver medallist, Russia’s Sofya Ochigava down to fourth.
The rankings are based on performances at AIBA tournaments over a two-year rolling period. Good news too for Ireland’s Elite male boxers with Jason Quigley (No.2), Michael Conlan (No. 2), Paddy Barnes (No.3) Joe Ward (no 9) and Tommy McCarthy (No. 9) at their respective weights.
For Ward it is ‘promotion’ as he was one place lower last month.
