McIlroy’s dreams of a second title are over

Rory McIlroy has yet again failed to make the cut for the final days of a tournament and thus ended his dreams of retaining his U.S. Open title.

The 23 year old shot a three over par round of 73 to leave him on 10 over par for the tournament missing the cut by 2 shots. McIlroy has a disastrous opening round of 77 on Thursday and was unable to recover on day 2.

Tournament favourite Tiger Woods is currently in a group of 3 in leading the way. He is joined by fellow Americans Jim Furyk and David toms on one under par. The Olympic Club is proving to be a very difficult test for all the players with few players scoring below par rounds.

Graham McDowell is the best of the Irish in a tie for fourth place with four other players including first round leader Michael Thompson. Thompson had a second round of five over par to slip down the leader board.

Padraig Harrington is the only other Irish man in contention in a tie for 18th on four over par following a level par second round.

Peter Lawrie failed to make the cut and finished on a disappointing eleven over par. McDowell, the 2010 champion is nicely set to make an assault at the leaders having stated that the omens are good for him earlier on in the week as he likes playing in California where he won the title two years ago.
