Channel 4 racing presenter Derek Thompson is hoping to be discharged from hospital later today after undergoing treatment for cancer.
The larger than life commentator had an operation to remove a tumour near his bowel last week at the Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridgeshire.
Thompson underwent the operation last Wednesday and was expecting to remain in hospital recovering for a week. He has stepped down from his duties with Channel 4 for the rest of July and perhaps August as he recuperates from the procedure.
Tommo said: “It’s going to be very frustrating because after Royal Ascot there are so many top meetings coming up around the country that I would normally enjoy but I will continue watching them in hospital.”
The father of four has received hundreds of messages of support since he announced he was suffering from the illness and in recent days has taken to his twitter account to express his appreciation for the good wishes and to thank the doctors and nurses who have been taking care of him over the past week.
“It’s going to be a testing few weeks, especially because Derek’s a man used to working every day. I’m hoping that he’ll be a good patient. We would like to thank all the people for their many good wishes and support,” his wife Julie added
