Dublin Tall Ships: List of events for festival

An overview of the upcoming four-day festival of the Dublin Tall Ships 2012. With music, street performances, exhibitions, workshops and talks galore, there is something to suit everyone, and we hope to see you all between August 23rd-26th!


Grand Canal Square
Thursday 23rd: 1pm – 6pm
Friday 24th: 11am – 7pm
Saturday 25th: 11am – 7pm
Sunday 26th: 11am – 2pm

A free family programme with nautical-themed workshops, an interactive sea orchestra, an open-air trapeze and circus sideshow, a shipwrecked silent disco for kids and an array of roving bands and performers.

Hanover Quay and Grand Canal Square Stage (evenings)

Back and bigger than ever, Kings of Concrete returns for its seventh annual urban sports festival, with skaters, breakdancers, street artists, BMXers and urban music fans coming from around the country to descend on Hanover Quay for four days of exciting activities and events, including wakeboarding and late-night skate competitions.

Grand Canal Dock and Basin will act as the centre for all the free fun water-based activities with a host of thrilling events taking place over the weekend, come and try your hand at wakeboarding , paddle boarding, kayaking, crazy golf, the water slide and gladiator-style water battles. People are advised to bring swimwear and towels if planning to participate in water activities.

Visit the Waterways centre and be entertained throughout the day with the exhibitions ‘A Very Grand Canal’ and ‘Small Ships at the Tall Ships’, plus watery stories from Puca Puppets, decorate a duck followed by a very quacky race, model boat making, a Waterways Choir perfomance and the Darklight kid’s programme featuring stop motion animation workshops (see darklight.ie for full programme)

    AREA 2:

CHQ, IFSC, Docklands, Dublin 1.

CHQ will be a hive of activity all weekend if you are in need of somewhere to relax and check out some of the docklands historical anecdotes. The Tall Ships exhibition programme will include the Dockers Preservation Society exhibition and talks series, Steveadoring Stories, an installation screening of The Swimmer plus artist talk with Fergal McCarthy, a festival chill-out area, a series of Viking demonstrations, upcycling demonstrations with a nautical twist and a variety of childrens and adults workshops including make a pop up ship to lifestyle and wellbeing.

Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th August

The festival is delighted to present a series of maritime-themed readings and talks in various locations, which celebrate the history and some of the personal tales from Dublin’s Docklands. Join celebrated writers, historians such as Peter Sheridan, Theo Dorgan, Anne Chambers , Turtle Bunbury and the local Dockers Preservation Society as they regale audiences with tales of the maritime experiences and Dublin’s docklands.

Over the course of four days, Dublin’s quayside will play host to a number of free, live performances from some of Ireland’s biggest musical acts, including stalwarts such as The Undertones, Therapy?, Ash, Duke Special, Cathy Davey, Jerry Fish as well as up-and-comers like This Club, Ryan Sheridan, Foy Vance, Riptide Movement and The Original Rudeboys.

    AREA 4:

North and South Quays
Thursday 23rd 7.30pm – 10.00pm
Friday 24th 7.30pm – 10.00pm
Saturday 25th 7.30pm – 10.00pm

A series of illuminated, pop-up quayside performances and events featuring live music, aerial dance performances and an outdoor floating cinema in Grand Canal Square.

    AREA 5:

North and South Quays

Friday 24th 11.00pm – 7.00pm
Saturday 25th 11.00pm – 7.00pm
Sunday 26th 11.00am – 2.00pm

The North and South quaysides will be bursting with markets, performers, buskers, and bands all weekend. Expect to come face to face with synchronised swimmers, The Van Dunks, the Fairly Fresh Fish Company, oversized lobsters, sea horses and leaping salmon!

    AREA 6:

Linear Park
Thursday 23rd 2.00pm – 6.00pm

Explore your passion for all things gastronomic at the Theatre of Food! With a host of cooking demos, tasting sessions, educational talks and opportunities to interact with some of Ireland’s top chefs, Theatre of Food is a food lover’s heaven.

    AREA 7:

Starts Point Village parading to Custom House Quay
Friday 24th August, 3.00pm

Friday will see thousands of Tall Ships crew members from all four corners of the globe march up Dublin’s North Quay for what promises to be a vibrant, colourful spectacle to kick off the weekend, finishing The Custom House for a special prize giving ceremony.

    AREA 8:

The Point Village
Thursday 23rd – Saturday 25th 10am – 10.00pm
Sunday 26th 10am – 6.00pm

The atmosphere in The Point Village will be electric as it hosts a fantastic funfair and an outdoor ice rink for four consecutive nights. Not a spectator sport – the funfair promises to be a fun-filled, ‘must-attend’ for all!

    AREA 9:

PARADE OF SAIL North and South Quays

Dublin Port will stage a stunning Parade of Sail as the ships depart the capital – you are invited to join in a special Bon Voyage to the ships, featuring Dublin Gospel Choir with a special ship songs performance on the Bulmers music stage and will be heard all along the river. For more family orientated fun you an head to Grand Canal Square where we will host an open-air family trad seisun to ‘play the ships out’.

    AREA 10:

Sunday 26th August: 13.00 – 14.00
Sir John Rogerson’s Quay

Come help us create a mass mobilization event and break the world record for the number of people participating in ‘’Rock the Boat’ in aid of Foróige.

The Tall Ships Races 2012 – Dublin, kicks off on Thursday August 23rd until Sunday 26th and will see Dublin city come alive with a festival atmosphere both on and off the water including the spectacular line up at the Bulmers Live Music Stage throughout the festival.

The Bulmers Live Music Stage on Georges Dock will include performances from Riptide Movement, This Club, The Mighty Stef, The Original Rude Boys, Ryan Sheridan and The Minutes plus legends of the Irish music scene Frank & Walters, Jerry Fish, The Undertones, Therapy? and Ash….plus many more!
