Venus Williams has been forced to pull out of this month’s French Open because of injury. Her absence will be a big blow for tournament organisers, coming just 24 hours after her sister Serena also withdrew.
The former has not played in competitive action since January when she withdrew from the Australian Open in the third round because of an abdominal injury. Prior to that,Venus had a knee injury which forced her to miss much of 2010. The French Open will now be the first Grand Slam tournament since 2003 that will feature neither of the Williams sisters.
Serena has been away from the courts since she won at Wimbledon last July. Days after her win in London, she injured her foot on glass at a restaurant and had to undergo two operations as a direct result. Unfortunately, she developed blood clots on her lungs and has been absent since. Although she is reported to be recovering well, the American is still some way off making her return.
