Conor Niland will have to wait until Friday morning to see if he can progress to Wimbledon after rain washed out most of today’s play at the Roehampton Club, meaning Niland did not get a chance to play any of his scheduled match with Nikola Mektic.

The Limerick man, bidding to become the first Irish born man in the Wimbledon’s singles draw Sean Sorensen in 1977 (Matt Doyle played Wimbledon in 1984 but was born in California but played Davis cup tennis for Ireland), will take to court with Croatian Mektic after the conclusion of the Women’s contest between Russian Nina Bratchikova and Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak, which is due to resume at 10.30 am tomorrow.

Dublin-based Vitalia Diatchenko will also have to wait until tomorrow morning to begin her own qualifier against Canada’s Stephanie Dubois.

As a result of today’s delays, both players will take to the court knowing the identity of their potential opponents in the main draw with the draw for the first round proper due to be announced at 10am.

Sportsnewsireland.com will have live score updates on all GAA Championship matches over the summer.
