Ireland’s interest in the 2011 Yonex World Badminton Federation championships ended here at Wembley Arena today when all of the Irish players in action lost in round two ,on day three of the tournament.

In the morning’s opening match in the Ladies Singles, Raphoe’s Chloe Magee was comprehensively beaten by the No 6 seed India’s Saina Nehwal 21/10 21/7 . Despite giving her all, Chloe was simply no match for the Indian champion, one of the favourites for the tournament.

Later in their mixed doubles tie , Chloe Magee and brother Sam were simply outclassed by No 2 seeds Tantowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia, 21/9 21/8. In fairness the Irish pairing battled for every point . It was not enough though to worry the Indonesians.

Ireland’s final hope, Scott Evans met number 2 seed, Lin Dan of China in the men’s singles, and here Evans putting in a strong performance against one of the world’s leading exponents of the game. That said he lost 21/15 21/16.
