Play suspended at Qatar Masters

Updated: February 3, 2012

Play was suspended at the Qatar Masters on Friday due to strong winds, with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano holding a one shot lead after the first round.

Officials made the call at 9:13 a.m. local time after the winds gusting upwards of 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph) became a safety issue. About half the field had started the second round with no player showing signs of challenging overnight leader Fernandez-Castano of Spain.

Meanwhile, Jose Manuel Lara of Spain, who shot 9-over 81 on Thursday, withdrew Friday with a bad back.
