The weekend announcement that Kevin Pietersen’s hernia problem necessitates him returning immediately for treatment opens the door once more to Eoin Morgan.

The ECB has called up Morgan as Pietersen’s replacement in the squad, a move which has just been approved by the International Cricket Council .

Pietersen’s operation will require around six weeks of recovery and is also set to rule Pietersen out of the Indian Premier League, where he was due to represent Deccan Chargers.

Morgan was originally named in England’s World Cup squad but himself withdrew after suffering a broken finger in the build-up to the tournament.

He has responded well to treatment, however, and though he may not be deemed fit enough to face Bangladesh on Friday, he will prove a key addition to the squad for the knockout stage should England qualify.
